Chocks away….!
So this is what the trip and the filming this week has been all about.
I finally get a chance to stand where Donald Campbell began his successful record-breaking career. The morning of 23rd July was quite warm but I had a chilling sensation as I stood at the edge of Ullswater, before the crowd arrived, and reflected on the bravery and tenacity of Donald Campbell to hurtle at over 202mph down the middle of the lake.
K7 was a static display, roped off from the public. I was allowed to position AC Bluebird alongside K7 and to capture the moment for my next book.
I met up with Neil Gilfillan, a record breaker in his own right, who made the chocks to hold K7 in place. A lovely man who can turn his hand to anything.
AC Bluebird received a lot of attention and I was asked many questions about the car. But I could not spend all my time talking, I needed to run the car several times along the A592 road where the film crew wanted footage of the car travelling the same road that it might have done in 1955.
The evening was spent on the good ship ‘Raven’, where Skipper Graeme took me and the film crew along the ‘measured mile’ and shared lots of information with me about Donald Campbell.
It was a long day and exhausting, but very fulfilling. Must get to the Ruskin Museum before we complete filming here, there is someone I want to see.
