Revisiting Donald Campbell’s Ullswater

As part of our planned trip to Ullswater with AC Bluebird in July this year I have been going through an old photo album from 1955 that commemorates Donald Campbell’s achievement. The album was a gift from Donald Campbell to Leo Villa, the man he relied on to get things done. The album covers the whole year and the build up to the record-breaking attempt.

There is a lovely handwritten message from Donald to Leo on the first page of the album. Photographs of Ullswater covered in ice and snow. Images of Leo and his team hard at work on K7. And, my favourite, a super photograph of K7 making waves on icy Ullswater with the snow from the hills reflecting on the water.

When I get to Ullswater in July I hope to revisit most of the locations shown in the album. From what I know, AC Bluebird spent more time at Ullswater than it did at Coniston, so for me it will be like bringing the car home.
